Recently, Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg just announce that Whatsapp has rolled video call features to almost all countries. Besides that, he also mentions that this feature will also work well in places that don't have a strong internet connection.
Eager to know about this feature, I had done some test to determine how much data it will use, how good it will be without strong internet connection and how good are the quality of the video and the voice while using it.
Before we start, I would like to let you guys know that I am using oneplusone(marshmallow 6.0) as the calling phone and note 5(marshmallow 6.0) as the receiver phone for this test.
Alright, let's start with :
How much data it will use
Before I do this test, I cleared my Whatsapp network usage for better result.
4g connection(1 minute 5 seconds) Total Bytes, send 1.6 MB, Receive Bytes 2.6 MB
4g connection(5 minutes 2 seconds) Total Bytes, send 9.9 MB, Receive Bytes 9.2 MB
3g connection(1 minute) Total Bytes, send 717kb, Receive Bytes 736kb
3g connection(5 minutes 6 seconds) Total Bytes, send 6.7 MB, Receive Bytes 9.7 MB
2g connection(2 minutes 2 second) Total Bytes, send 703kb, Receive Bytes 1.0 MB
How good it will be without strong internet connection
For 4g, the video and call quality is just perfect. There nothing delay whatsoever for the video and the sound.
For 3g (H+), the video did hang a bit for like 1-2 second in the beginning probably because of the connection problem. But after that, the video and call quality back to normal again without any hanging issue. But I still can see a little hang time, but overall it great, that little hang time is so little that most people probably wouldn't care about it.
Alright the last one, 2g (E, H), I will never ever recommended people to use the video call feature with such connection. Yes, we can still call the person using the video call feature but the video will stop because the connection is just too bad. It keeps on reconnecting several times and hardly able to hear the voice of the people talking.
My thought after using this feature.
To be honest, I really impress on how optimize this video call function is. The amount of data used during video call is surprisingly low and the video and the call are great!
I saw a lot of wechat user bashing Whatsapp because of how late they release this feature. Well, they are right...and wrong too at the same. Whatsapp is way more optimize compares to wechat and the reason why they slow on releasing such feature is because they focus more on quality and high quality app is their priority.
